CJMP News Feature: Saving the Green Heart of Powell River, an Interview with Andrew Bryant (July 15, 2016)
Jul 15, 2016 by CarrieLast year a group of residents said no to the logging in Lot 450, or what became called the green heart of Powell River. They organized, and on a few spring evenings in May 2015, camped out in the bush. The idea was to block the machinery, and stop the logging. Island Timberlands didn’t go through, except to take the feller buncher out of the spot where it sat immobile.
Andrew Bryant, an independent biologist, took his own path in saving those trees. He counted birds’ nests, because he knew provincial law. If a bird is raising its young, harvesting timber must wait until the fledgling can flap its wings and fly the coop. In late May, there were a number of birds, still nesting. Carrie Swiggum, CJMP news director, went for a walk with Andrew Bryant, near the pole line, on Lot 450 a week ago, in early July.
