CJMP News Feature - PRISMA (June 24 2016)

Today marks the second-last day of the PRISMA Festival & Academy, here in Powell River. The festival attracts world-renowned musicians and students, drawing audiences of more than 5000 people, and filling this town with music. CJMP News producer Ioni Wais is on the scene at one of these events, talking to Shannon Fitzhenry, who was the winner of last year’s Concerto Contest

CJMP News Feature - Save Desolation Sound (June 24 2016)

Thursday evening a group of concerned citizens held an informational meeting and fundraising dinner at the Royal Vancouver Yacht club. The group is called Save desolation Sound and is a newly created non-profit. They are organizing against a proposed gravel pit that would be located at the Lloyd Creek area, north of the designated Desolation Sound provincial park.

The company behind the proposed pit is Lehigh Hanson Materials Limited, which employs nearly 2000 Canadians. The company is owned by HeidelbergCement of Germany, which operates in more than 40 countries. They deal in cement, concrete and heavy building products.

On June 10, the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations made an offer to Lehigh Hanson Materials in regards to an investigative licence to dig in Desolation sound. Once the company signs off on the offer, the licence is considered issued, and the proposed investigative activities would move forward.

We spoke with Russell Hollingsworth, one of the Save Desolation Sound board directors.

CJMP News Feature - Welcome Refugees (June 24 2016)

After many months of planning and procedure, a refugee family from Syria is moving to Powell River. The not-for-profit organization Welcome Refugee Powell River put out a press release earlier this week, stating that the Azrak family would be arriving in Powell River on Wednesday June 22nd. We now go to CJMP News Intern Ioni Wais at the Westview Ferry Terminal, for some radio coverage from the welcome party.
